What is professional protection film?
Paint Protection Film, also called PPF or clear bra, is a thermoplastic urethane film intentionally invented for car paint protection. It’s applied to the vehicle’s surface and protects it from external damage. Initially, these films were used in the military – to protect helicopter blades from debris. However, the technology was quickly adopted by the automotive industry for protection purposes.
At Tinting Chicago, we use only prime PPF products – clear and virtually invisible. Such a film is 6 – 8 mils thick (paint is only 4-5 mils) and has the following advantages:
- Self-healing properties that allow minor scratches to disappear with heat exposure.
- A hydrophobic surface that repels water and contaminants.
- UV resistance that prevents yellowing over time.
- Optical clarity that maintains your vehicle’s original appearance unchanged.
- Flexibility allows the film to be applied to curves and contours.
Wax and various sealants are also popular protective solutions, but they need frequent reapplication. Professional paint protection film works differently – it provides durable protection for 5-10 years and is valued for this long-term service. In Chicago’s unpredictable weather, it’s a must-have upgrade.
How does car paint protection work?
PPF is like a clear shield for your car’s paint. We offer XPEL paint protection film that is known for its prime quality. It’s made of several layers that each serve a purpose:
- The adhesive layer attaches the film to your car. It’s designed not to damage the paint and can be safely removed when needed.
- A soft polyurethane layer soaks up the impact from rocks or debris, so the force doesn’t reach your paint.
- The self-healing layer contains elastomeric polymers; if the film gets scratched, it can heal itself when it gets warm.
- The top layer creates a hydrophobic surface which repels water, resists stains, and protects against sun damage.
Ceramic coating as a PPF alternative
We can also offer you ceramic coatings at our Naperville shop. It’s a different type of protection that seriously differs from PPF. Ceramic coating doesn’t protect your car with a thick layer – it works on a chemical level:
- Nano coating. Ceramic coatings use tiny particles that bond to your car’s paint. This creates a strong, invisible layer.
- Thin but strong. The coating forms a thin, glass-like shield that sticks tightly to the surface.
- Water and dirt repellent. Because the surface is so smooth, water, dirt, and some chemicals slide off and do not stick.
Ceramic coatings are stronger than wax and last much longer. They are great against stains and chemicals but don’t protect against scratches or rock chips as PPF does.
Tinting Chicago offers several packages – you will definitely find an option for your budget.
Cost of paint protection film
It’s wise to fully wrap your car with the film. But even a partial PPF does a good job:

- Full front (front bumper, fender, hood, headlights) – from $1,750 for coupe/sedan and from $1,850 for SUV/pickup.
- Full car (all exterior painted parts of the vehicle) – from $5,499 for coupe/sedan and from $5,999 for SUV/pickup.
